No longer merely as the Argentine president who brandished a chainsaw, expressed admiration for Margaret Thatcher and promised to demolish much of his country\u2019s economic orthodoxy. Britain is now watching him from a rather more uncomfortable vantage point: the South Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times puts the question plainly: is Milei stirring up the Falklands dispute to remain popular?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a British question. That distinction matters, because when sovereignty is involved, even commas carry passports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The London newspaper offers three possible explanations for the hardening of Argentina\u2019s rhetoric: an attempt to divert attention from domestic difficulties; a genuine reaction to the exploitation of natural resources around the islands; or an international manoeuvre encouraged by the ambiguity Donald Trump has introduced into the traditional relationship between Washington and London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three hypotheses. Not three established facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is where the story becomes considerably more interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because while London searches for Milei\u2019s intentions beneath Argentina\u2019s political carpet, something far less abstract lies beneath the sea: oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sea Lion project, promoted by Navitas Petroleum and Rockhopper Exploration, envisages exploiting hydrocarbons in the basin north of the islands. London and the island authorities regard this as the legitimate development of their own resources. Buenos Aires regards it as the exploitation of resources in a territory whose sovereignty Argentina claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when oil appears beneath a territorial dispute, even diplomacy quickly learns geology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During September, the Argentine government moved from words to paperwork. It announced sanctions against individuals and companies associated with hydrocarbon activities, proposed stronger legal instruments to defend the resources Argentina claims, and ultimately ordered the initiation of arbitration procedures under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea concerning the Sea Lion project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The political timing chosen by Milei can be questioned. So can his change of tone. One may legitimately ask how much is conviction, how much electoral strategy and how much foreign policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is considerably harder to argue is that there is no concrete dispute over concrete economic resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times naturally turns its gaze towards Buenos Aires as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It points to the difficulties still affecting sections of Argentine society despite acknowledging some of the government\u2019s macroeconomic achievements. Wages, household debt, transport costs, utility bills and political fatigue all enter the picture. And over that table hangs an old question that accompanies governments whenever they revive a national cause during difficult times: conviction or diversion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The suspicion is not exclusively British.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Management &amp; Fit survey conducted after Milei\u2019s national address found that 61.1 per cent of respondents attributed his renewed emphasis on the Falklands to \u201cpolitical convenience\u201d, while 24.7 per cent associated it with personal conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A poll measures perceptions. It does not open a president\u2019s head to discover what is inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times also introduces a much heavier comparison. Former president Alberto Fern\u00e1ndez likened Milei\u2019s political predicament to that of Leopoldo Galtieri before the 1982 war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That comparison belongs to Fern\u00e1ndez. It is not an established historical equivalence between the two governments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the fundamental difference deserves to be written in thick ink: Argentina in 2026 is using political, diplomatic, administrative and legal instruments. It is not sending military forces to occupy the islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confusing the two may produce a spectacular headline. It does considerably less to explain the present situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Donald Trump enters the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here the board becomes deliciously uncomfortable for London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milei maintains a close political relationship with the US president. At the same time, statements and signals from Washington have introduced uncertainty about how automatic American support for Britain might be in a hypothetical future crisis involving the islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does not mean the United States has recognised Argentine sovereignty over the Falklands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in diplomacy there is a considerable difference between handing over a cheque and merely leaving the pen on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London knows it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may help explain why British language on the matter deserves close attention.
