For decades it has hosted a joint British-American military facility whose strategic importance greatly exceeds the island\u2019s dimensions. From there, operations can be projected towards the Middle East and across large areas of Asia and Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Kingdom and Mauritius signed a treaty in May 2025 under which Mauritius would exercise sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, while Britain would retain, for an initial period of 99 years, the rights necessary to keep the Diego Garcia base operational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But signed does not mean settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement\u2019s entry into force requires changes to British legislation, and its implementation has become entangled in a political and strategic storm that has now brought Washington back to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump made little effort to conceal his position. He called the agreement \u201cterrible\u201d and \u201cridiculous\u201d, once again placing military considerations above diplomatic niceties. Diego Garcia, in essence, is simply too important to be treated like an ordinary piece of Indian Ocean real estate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burnham chose a considerably more British response: he listened, did not formally bury the agreement, and agreed to look at the situation again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a reason for such caution. Only hours earlier he had spoken with Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam. According to Downing Street, the two reaffirmed their willingness to work alongside the United States to find a solution safeguarding the operation of Diego Garcia and British national security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London thus finds itself performing one of diplomacy\u2019s oldest exercises: telling two interlocutors things that are compatible, although not necessarily identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mauritius wants recognition of its sovereignty to become reality. The United States wants absolute guarantees over a military installation it regards as strategically essential. And the United Kingdom needs to achieve both without discovering, at the end of the negotiations, that it has satisfied neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also one detail that prevents the issue from being reduced to another Trumpian extravagance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mauritius\u2019s claim did not appear yesterday. In 2019, the International Court of Justice concluded in an advisory opinion that British administration of the archipelago should end as rapidly as possible. Other international proceedings subsequently strengthened Mauritius\u2019s position. London eventually agreed to negotiate, and the 2025 treaty emerged from that process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem, therefore, is considerably more complicated than deciding who possesses the largest flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It involves sovereignty, international law, military security, colonial history and a base Washington and London regard as indispensable. Five ingredients more than sufficient to ensure that any simple solution stops being simple before the second paragraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then the Falklands appeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burnham confirmed that he had also raised the islands with Trump and reiterated Britain\u2019s position in defence of the Falkland Islanders\u2019 right to self-determination and to remain British.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, the files should not be shuffled together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chagos and the Falklands\/Malvinas are not legally equivalent cases. Their histories, international resolutions, populations and diplomatic frameworks differ. But their appearance in the same presidential conversation reveals something they do share: when an island occupies a strategic position, geography quickly ceases to be merely geography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It becomes foreign policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Chagos, London negotiated sovereignty while seeking to retain military capability. In the Falklands\/Malvinas, it maintains British sovereignty and invokes the islanders\u2019 right to self-determination. Argentina, naturally, takes the opposite position on sovereignty and maintains its claim to the archipelago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no reason to manufacture an equivalence where none exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is every reason to observe the method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">States can speak of universal principles with admirable solemnity.
