Thailand and Cambodia: old gunpowder, new borders

Thailand has launched airstrikes against Cambodia. Yes—late 2026, in a world dreaming of flying cars and holographic peace conferences, Bangkok chose to go vintage and play bomber over a border that already knows its tragedy by heart.

The military briefing sounded like a tired script: one soldier dead, four wounded, and immediate retaliation with aircraft “to suppress Cambodian attacks.” Translation: crossfire, old grudges, and a leadership that prefers uniforms over dialogue.

Phnom Penh returned the volley with Olympic speed: accusing Thailand of firing first, of shelling centuries-old temples, of shooting anywhere and everywhere—except where someone might answer back. Meanwhile, villagers near the border are fleeing yet again, and the temple of Tamone Thom becomes another unwilling actor in the dispute.

Around 35,000 people were evacuated on the Thai side. In Buri Ram, Thai forces accused Cambodia of firing BM-21 rockets—luckily with no casualties. But the border now smells of powder, nerves, and predictable political choreography.

The déjà vu is complete: just months ago, five days of clashes left 43 dead and 300,000 displaced. A ceasefire followed, along with diplomatic smiles. The United States, China, and Malaysia played referees. Then came Trump’s trade-friendly joint declaration—signed, celebrated… and now suspended after an alleged mine blast that injured several soldiers.

Each side blames the other. A civilian dies. Shots are fired. Accusations multiply. And beneath it all lies the same century-old problem: disputed borders drawn during the French colonial era, with temples left as poorly wrapped souvenirs.

A conflict nobody needs, nobody can win, and everybody recycles.

In Southeast Asia, history doesn’t repeat—it insists.
